Teaching

I teach three types of course:

  • MBA
  • PhD
  • Executive education

MBA courses usually consist of between 6 and 10 three-hour sessions.  All these courses have about 70 students in the classroom.

My PhD course is also a ten-week, three hours a week course, but with much fewer students in the room.

Executive courses usually run for half a day or a full day, often being part of a larger company-programme, involving something between 15 and 35 executives.  I try to revitalise their view of their companies, introduce them to the latest thinking in strategy research, and give them practical tools and insight that they can use to improve the functioning of their organisations.

My teaching style is highly interactive, in any of these courses.  It is Socratic, in the sense that I stimulate dialogue and debate, and use a variety of teaching materials: cases, videos, presentations, break-out groups, etc. In 2005 I won the London Business School Junior Faculty Teaching Award. In 2008, I was announced as the School's first ever winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award.
